BCCI Concerned Over Injured Varun Chakravarthy Playing Despite Hairline Fracture In IPL 2026

Varun Chakravarthy’s decision to bowl through a reported hairline fracture for KKR has reportedly raised serious concerns within the BCCI ahead of India’s upcoming white-ball assignments.

The long-standing Country versus Club debate has resurfaced once again after Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Varun Chakravarthy reportedly played through a hairline fracture during the IPL 2026 clash against Gujarat Titans on Saturday.

Despite visible discomfort while bowling, Chakravarthy completed his full quota of four overs for KKR in a must-win encounter. The mystery spinner struggled throughout the spell and finished with figures of 0/47 while managing only three dot balls.

The development has reportedly not gone down well with officials associated with the Indian cricket team, especially with India scheduled to play seven T20Is in Dublin and England next month.

“I know for a fact that KKR physio is in touch with Team India physio (Kamlesh Jain). There has been a communication from KKR to BCCI that in a previous match, Varun injured his left foot while saving a boundary. It is understood that he has a hairline fracture. I believe as a centrally contracted player of the BCCI, his fitness is paramount and the BCCI medical team could intervene. Jain might be asked as to what was the input from the KKR medical team,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Questions Raised Over KKR’s Decision

The report further claimed that questions are now being raised over why Chakravarthy featured in the match despite missing the previous encounter against Royal Challengers Bengaluru because of the same injury concern.

Although KKR remain in a desperate playoff battle, concerns are growing over whether the franchise took an unnecessary risk with one of India’s premier T20 bowlers.

“If Varun was rested against RCB in the last game because of his foot injury, it is imperative to know how he couldn’t make it for that game (on May 13) after four-day break (vs DC on May 8) but played on Saturday. Yes, KKR’s campaign is on the line but can the BCCI allow franchises this kind of indiscretion? A player would want to play through pain but is that a fair thing?,” the official questioned.

The BCCI medical unit, headed by Kamlesh Jain, could reportedly intervene and advise KKR against fielding Chakravarthy in the remaining league matches.

India’s Upcoming Schedule Adds To Concerns

While Varun Chakravarthy is primarily viewed as a T20 specialist, his workload and recovery timeline have now become a major talking point ahead of India’s upcoming tour of the United Kingdom beginning on June 26.

The Afghanistan home series does not feature T20Is, but the concern remains whether the spinner will recover fully if the injury worsens during the IPL playoffs race.

KKR are scheduled to play Mumbai Indians on May 20 and Delhi Capitals on May 24 at Eden Gardens. With the franchise still fighting for survival in IPL 2026, it remains to be seen whether Chakravarthy will continue to feature despite the injury concerns.
