How the IPL Works

The Structure

The IPL features 10 franchises representing major Indian cities and regions. The tournament begins with a league stage where teams play a full set of fixtures before qualifying for the playoffs.

The Playoffs

The IPL uses a playoff format designed to reward league-stage consistency:

  • Qualifier 1: 1st vs 2nd — winner advances directly to the final
  • Eliminator_attach: 3rd vs 4th — loser is knocked out
  • Qualifier 2: Loser of Qualifier 1 vs winner of Eliminator
  • Final: Winner crowned IPL champion

Squads & Overseas Players

Squads are built primarily through an auction system alongside retention and trade windows. A playing XI may include a maximum of 4 overseas players, ensuring every team maintains a strong Indian core.

IPL TEAMS

Each IPL franchise has a distinct identity shaped by recruitment strategy, leadership, and playing philosophy. Explore team profiles, current squads, and roster movement through the team pages below.
