CSK CEO confirms Sanju Samson will take over wicketkeeping duties in MS Dhoni’s absence, hinting at a potential long-term transition.
As Chennai Super Kings gear up for their IPL 2026 opener against Rajasthan Royals, a major update has emerged regarding the team’s wicketkeeping duties. With MS Dhoni unavailable for the opening game, Sanju Samson is set to take charge behind the stumps.
Samson, who was acquired from Rajasthan Royals in a pre-auction trade, is expected to play a key role right from the start of the season.
CSK CEO Confirms Decision and Backs Sanju Samson’s Form
CSK CEO Kasi Vishwanathan confirmed that Samson will handle wicketkeeping responsibilities in Dhoni’s absence, while also praising his current form.
“See, obviously, Sanju will be keeping because his MS Dhoni is not going to play. Sanju’s form is great and he’s been knocking well in the nets also. So we’re hoping that he’ll give the impact that CSK is looking for during the current season. Of course, we have Ruturaj, who is also capable of taking the team to higher levels, and his captaincy is one which definitely will lift the team,” Vishwanathan said.
Long-Term Successor Role in Focus
Beyond the immediate replacement, Samson’s inclusion is also being viewed as a strategic move for the future, with the franchise potentially grooming him as Dhoni’s long-term successor.
Vishwanathan emphasized that the team is keen to support Samson without adding pressure, expressing confidence in his abilities.

“As far as Sanju is concerned, we don’t want to put any pressure on him because we know his capabilities. I have not spent much time talking to Sanju, as I met him only a couple of days back, and during practice, I would never go and disturb him. I’m very confident that Sanju, with his abilities and his form, will be a great bet for us,” he added.
With Ruturaj Gaikwad leading the side, CSK appear to be balancing present performance with future planning as they begin their IPL 2026 campaign.
