Hardik Pandya’s future as Mumbai Indians captain has reportedly come under serious threat after the franchise’s disastrous IPL 2026 campaign, with senior players and team dynamics also under scrutiny.

Mumbai Indians could be preparing for another massive leadership shake-up after reports claimed that Hardik Pandya is likely to lose the captaincy following the franchise’s disastrous IPL 2026 season. The five-time IPL champions endured one of their worst campaigns in history, finishing ninth on the points table after losing 10 of their 14 league matches.

Hardik Pandya, who replaced Rohit Sharma as Mumbai Indians skipper ahead of IPL 2024, was initially viewed as the long-term successor to lead the franchise into a new era. However, after back-to-back underwhelming seasons, doubts have reportedly intensified over his role within the side.

Hardik Pandya’s Captaincy Future Under Massive Cloud

Speculation around Pandya’s future grew stronger after Mumbai Indians’ disappointing exit from IPL 2026. Reports also noted that the all-rounder deactivated his Instagram account shortly after the campaign ended, further fuelling discussions surrounding his situation within the franchise.

According to a report from Indian Express, Mumbai Indians management are now evaluating multiple options ahead of the next season, including whether Pandya should continue as captain or remain in the squad purely as a player.

“There were enough signs during the season that the team management wasn’t keen to retain him as captain. There is a clear buzz in the camp,”

Pandya had returned to Mumbai Indians after leading Gujarat Titans to an IPL title in 2022. The franchise believed his leadership credentials could help revive their dominance after their last title-winning season in 2020.

Senior Mumbai Indians Players Also Under Scanner

The concerns within the franchise reportedly extend beyond Pandya’s captaincy. The report claimed that Mumbai Indians’ senior players are also facing scrutiny regarding dressing-room culture and their willingness to follow coaching strategies.

Despite boasting several Indian stars including Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma, MI failed to produce consistent performances throughout the season.

Bumrah struggled to make his usual impact with the ball, while Suryakumar and Tilak endured inconsistent campaigns. Rohit Sharma also battled injury concerns during the tournament.

“The coaching staff was very clear in its message to the senior players that wherever they play, they need to be coachable. There were many instances where the coaching staff recommended something backed by data, but the players didn’t follow it,”

Major Discussions Expected Inside MI Camp

With Mumbai Indians enduring another difficult season, major internal discussions are now expected in the coming weeks regarding the team’s future structure and leadership direction.

A former Mumbai Indians player also hinted that the franchise could consider every possible option moving forward as they attempt to rebuild after consecutive disappointing campaigns.

“There will be serious introspection and discussion in the coming days. Every option will be weighed. Many questions need to be addressed. Going ahead, can Hardik be the captain? Does he stay in the team just as a player?”
