IPL captains have raised concerns over the Impact Player rule, but BCCI has decided to retain it until at least the 2027 season.
The controversial Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League has once again come under scrutiny, with multiple team captains expressing dissatisfaction during the pre-season meeting held at the Board of Control for Cricket in India headquarters on March 25, 2026.
During the discussion, several skippers reportedly raised issues about the rule, particularly its effect on maintaining a fair contest and its influence on team strategies. The concerns gained momentum after one of the senior-most captains spoke up, prompting others to support the viewpoint in what was the first all-Indian captains’ meeting before an IPL season.
BCCI Confirms Rule Will Stay Until 2027
Despite acknowledging the concerns raised, as per The Hindu, IPL and BCCI officials made it clear that the rule will not be altered immediately. Instead, any potential changes will only be considered after the 2027 edition of the tournament.
The Impact Player rule, introduced in 2023, allows teams to substitute a player at any stage of a match. This has significantly changed gameplay dynamics, with teams often swapping a batter for a specialist bowler or vice versa, thereby reshaping traditional team structures.

Concerns Over All-Rounders and Match Conditions
One of the key criticisms of the rule is its impact on the role of all-rounders, as teams increasingly rely on specialists due to the substitution flexibility. Many believe this could hinder the growth of Indian all-round talent in the long run.
In addition to this, a suggestion was made by a captain to allow a ball change midway through the second innings to tackle the issue of dew. However, officials including Javagal Srinath and Nitin Menon rejected the proposal, stating that the current rules already provide provisions to manage dew in the latter stages of matches.
