IPL 2026 Opening Ceremony Cancelled: BCCI Pays Tribute to Bengaluru Stampede Victims

RCB, KSCA Plan Memorial for 11 Stampede Victims at Chinnaswamy Stadium

BCCI cancels IPL 2026 opening ceremony to honour Bengaluru stampede victims, with a grand closing event planned instead.

In a significant and sensitive move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has decided to forgo the traditional opening ceremony for the Indian Premier League 2026 season. The decision comes as a tribute to the 11 victims who lost their lives in the tragic stampede in Bengaluru on June 4 last year during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s maiden title celebrations.

As a result, there will be no pre-match festivities ahead of the tournament opener between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

BCCI Plans Grand Closing Ceremony Instead

While the opening ceremony has been cancelled, the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council are preparing to host a grand closing ceremony at the end of the tournament. The event is scheduled to take place on May 31, the day of the IPL 2026 final.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the development, stating:

“Due to last year’s tragic incident on June 4 last year, there will be no formal function on the day of the start of IPL-2026 (in Bengaluru). The BCCI is not organizing any cultural or entertainment show at the start of IPL-19 as a mark of respect to the departed souls due to that tragedy on June 4, 2025.

However, the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council are planning a grand entertainment function at the closing of the IPL, on the day of the final (May 31),” Saikia told to TOI.

Past Precedents and IPL 2026 Kickoff

This is not the first time the BCCI has taken such a step. In 2019, following the Pulwama attack that claimed the lives of around 40 CRPF personnel, the board had cancelled the IPL opening ceremony and redirected funds to support the victims’ families.

Last year, however, the opening ceremony was held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, featuring performances by Shah Rukh Khan, Shreya Ghoshal, Karan Aujla, and Disha Patani.

The IPL 2026 season is set to begin on March 28, with Sunrisers Hyderabad facing Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Bengaluru. Meanwhile, Saikia also indicated that the schedule for the remaining matches of the tournament will be announced “very soon.”
