Kaif Suggests MI Return for Ishan Kishan To Open With Bat Again

Mohammad Kaif recommended that Ishan Kishan should rejoin Mumbai Indians where he could open the innings in IPL.

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif believes Ishan Kishan should return to Mumbai Indians. He stated that Kishan performs best as an opening batter, a position he would likely get with Mumbai Indians. Currently with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kishan has been batting at number three, where his effectiveness decreases.

Statistics show a significant difference in Kishan’s performance based on his batting position. As an opener in 55 innings, he has scored 1,733 runs at an average of 33.98. When batting at number three, his average drops to 26.60 with 532 runs.

Kaif explained the situation on his YouTube channel. “Ishan Kishan is a better batter at Wankhede. He will open if he plays for MI. At SRH he is playing at three. There is a huge difference. He has not got that advantage playing at three. Despite taking him at a high price SRH have not been able to give him the right slot as it is not available.”

The former cricketer suggested a potential solution. “Maybe Ishan would be requesting himself to go to Mumbai if any deal is possible because he will get to open there. It is a very good option for Mumbai if they can get Ishan. Having an Indian keeper and opener will give them the option to play some other foreign player then.”

Kishan on Abhishek Sharma Connection

Kishan started the IPL 2025 season strongly with a century against Rajasthan Royals. However, his form declined as the tournament progressed. After being purchased by SRH for INR 11.25 crore, their most expensive auction buy, Kishan immediately contacted teammate Abhishek Sharma.

He shared this during a press conference. “(After the IPL auction) I straightaway called Abhishek (Sharma) and asked, ‘what are you guys expecting, do I have to come and hit each and every ball?’ He was like, ‘on point, yeah, that is your job, you come here and you hit each and every ball, you just enjoy this team.’ That is the best part.”
