Jasprit Bumrah Fit For Mumbai Indians Opener; Joins Squad Ahead Of KKR Clash

Mumbai Indians Receive Big Update on Jasprit Bumrah Before First Game

Jasprit Bumrah’s return strengthens Mumbai Indians ahead of their IPL 2026 opener against KKR at Wankhede.

Jasprit Bumrah has officially rejoined the Mumbai Indians squad and is available for their IPL 2026 season opener against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Head coach Mahela Jayawardene confirmed the development, easing concerns around the star pacer’s availability.

Although Bumrah missed Friday’s training session, he returned on Saturday and actively participated in preparations on the eve of the match. His presence comes as a major boost for MI, especially given his consistent impact in previous seasons.

Intense Training Session Signals Match Readiness

Bumrah gradually worked his way into full rhythm during the training session. He began by bowling at the stumps without a run-up before marking his approach and delivering at full pace for a short but intense spell.

He also spent time interacting with MI’s bowling coach Lasith Malinga, discussing adjustments between deliveries. His recent visit to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru focused on strength and conditioning, part of a broader workload management plan designed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India medical team, keeping in mind India’s upcoming white-ball tour of England.

MI Face Selection Challenges Despite Bumrah Boost

Despite Bumrah’s return, Mumbai Indians will miss key overseas players Mitchell Santner and Will Jacks for the opening clash. Addressing their absence, Jayawardene said:

“Mitch and Jacksy both asked for a slightly extended time for personal reasons,” Jayawardene said on the eve of MI’s season opener against KKR. “And we were quite happy to go with that. But they’ll join the team pretty soon.

“I’m not sure [when they will join] but pretty soon. It’s just that we don’t want to divulge what is not fair for either party. But being honest, we feel that it’s fine with us with who we have got.”

In their absence, MI could turn to players like Sherfane Rutherford and AM Ghazanfar to fill the gaps.

Historically, MI have struggled in season openers, having not won their first game since 2012. However, their dominance over KKR at Wankhede—winning 10 out of 12 encounters—offers confidence heading into the clash.
