KSCA Plans Capacity Expansion For RCB’s Home M Chinnaswamy Stadium After IPL 2026 Final Shift

Devajit Saikia Clarifies Why M Chinnaswamy Stadium Was Dropped From IPL 2026 Final

KSCA has initiated plans to redevelop and expand the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, with president Venkatesh Prasad confirming that nearly 28 architects have shown interest in redesigning RCB’s iconic home venue.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s iconic home venue, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, is set to undergo a major transformation as the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) moves ahead with redevelopment and expansion plans.

The development was confirmed by former India pacer and current KSCA president Venkatesh Prasad during the launch ceremony of the Maharaja Trophy and Maharani Trophy on Friday. According to Prasad, the association has already received strong global interest from architects for the ambitious project.

“One of the reasons why the IPL final was moved from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad could have been the seating capacity,” Prasad was quoted as saying by Sportstar. “We had close to 28 architects – from across the globe – show interest in redesigning and redeveloping the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. We are in the process of shortlisting the final team of architects.”

The move comes shortly after the IPL 2026 final was shifted from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

IPL Final Shift And Capacity Concerns

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had earlier clarified that the IPL final venue change happened due to “certain requirements from the local association and authorities that were beyond” its scope of “established guidelines and protocols.”

However, Prasad hinted that the current seating limitations of the Chinnaswamy Stadium may also have influenced the decision. Bengaluru’s stadium presently accommodates around 40,000 spectators, while Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium can host more than 1,30,000 fans, making it the largest cricket venue in the world.

RCB played five of their seven IPL 2026 home matches at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, while the remaining two fixtures were shifted to the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur.

Stadium Upgrades And New LED Lights Planned

The IPL 2026 season marked the first major cricket tournament hosted at the Chinnaswamy Stadium since the tragic stampede incident outside the venue during RCB’s title celebrations last year. Following the incident, the stadium was temporarily barred from hosting events before receiving clearance again after infrastructure and security improvements were completed earlier this year.

Apart from the redevelopment plans, Prasad also confirmed that new LED floodlights will be installed at multiple KSCA venues, including the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, the Srikantadatta Narasimha Raja Wadeyar Cricket Stadium in Mysuru, and the KSCA Stadium in Hubballi.
