Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene confirmed Rohit Sharma is fully fit and clarified that the veteran opener’s Impact Substitute role in IPL 2026 is purely a tactical decision.
Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has put an end to concerns surrounding Rohit Sharma’s fitness ahead of MI’s final IPL 2026 league-stage clash against Rajasthan Royals. The former Sri Lanka captain confirmed that the veteran Indian opener is completely fit despite missing nearly three weeks earlier in the season due to a hamstring injury.
Rohit’s limited time on the field in recent matches had sparked speculation over whether Mumbai Indians were still carefully managing his workload. However, Jayawardene clarified that the franchise is no longer restricting the former MI captain physically.

MI Explain Rohit Sharma’s Impact Substitute Usage
Jayawardene revealed that Rohit’s continued role as an Impact Substitute is now mainly because of team balance and tactical flexibility rather than injury management.
“According to me, according to our medical team, Rohit is 100%. After coming back from the hamstring injury, first game we were a bit cautious. Now he is playing as an Impact Sub just for the team combination when we are bowling. He is a team player; he perfectly understands it,” Jayawardene said.
The statement has eased fears regarding Rohit’s long-term fitness, especially with discussions already beginning around India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
