Deepak Chahar recalled MS Dhoni angry reaction during a tense 2019 IPL match where he bowled two consecutive no-balls.
Chennai Super Kings bowler Deepak Chahar has revealed a tense moment with captain MS Dhoni during a critical IPL 2019 match against Kings XI Punjab. The incident occurred when Chahar bowled two consecutive no-balls in the penultimate over with Punjab needing 39 runs from 12 balls.
Chahar shared the story during Bigg Boss 19’s family week, describing how Dhoni approached him after the disastrous start. The match at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium saw Punjab chasing 161 when MS Dhoni entrusted Chahar with the crucial 19th over.
The Tense On-Field Exchange
The over began disastrously with a waist-high no-ball that Sarfaraz Khan hit for a boundary. The next delivery also became a no-ball, conceding two more runs. Within two attempts, Chahar had given away eight runs without bowling a legal delivery.
Chahar revealed that MS Dhoni marched toward him and expressed his frustration clearly. “Tu bewakoof nahi, main bewakoof hoon,” Dhoni told the young bowler. This translated to “You are not an idiot, I am,” indicating Dhoni was taking responsibility for assigning him the over.
Chahar admitted the stern rebuke made him feel his career was collapsing. He believed he would never be trusted with death overs again after such a performance.
Despite the rocky start, Chahar demonstrated remarkable composure. He conceded only five more runs in the remaining deliveries and claimed the vital wicket of David Miller. The over ultimately cost 13 runs, a significant recovery from its disastrous beginning.
Chennai won the match by 22 runs, with Chahar’s resilient comeback proving crucial. The episode highlights both Dhoni’s leadership style and Chahar’s ability to perform under extreme pressure.
Chahar has played six seasons with CSK and also worked under Dhoni at Rising Pune Supergiant. His recollection provides insight into the high-pressure environment of IPL cricket and Dhoni’s methods of handling young players during critical moments.
