Pat Cummins Prioritises Australia Over Franchise Cricket Amid IPL And BBL Debate

Australia Confident Pat Cummins And Josh Hazlewood Will Be Fit For T20 World Cup

Pat Cummins has reaffirmed that Australian cricket and Test cricket remain his top priorities despite growing concerns around franchise leagues and player workload management.

Australia captain Pat Cummins has made it clear that his focus remains firmly on representing Australia despite increasing discussions around players prioritising franchise cricket over international commitments.

The Australian skipper addressed the growing debate surrounding Cricket Australia contracts, the IPL, and other global T20 leagues during the New Balance Grey Days 2026 celebration and the launch of The New Retail Concept store in Delhi NCR on Tuesday.

Cummins, who is currently leading Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026, confirmed that his priorities have not changed despite concerns about the packed international calendar and lucrative franchise opportunities.

“Nothing has changed for me, my priority is Australian cricket, No. 1, particularly Test cricket,” Cummins told ESPNcricinfo. “As Test captain, I never want to miss any Test cricket and make myself available for as many Aussie games as I can.

“The IPL is good in that it normally fits in our holiday break, so that’s the obvious one, but they are probably my main focuses and I don’t see that’s going to change at all for the next few years for me at least.”

Franchise Cricket Debate Intensifies In Australia

The discussion around franchise cricket has intensified in Australia after several senior players reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with Cricket Australia’s latest contract offers earlier this month.

Cummins himself sparked debate earlier this year when he admitted there was a “tension point” among Australian players regarding balancing national duty and franchise opportunities. The discussion became more relevant after Australia’s proposed Bangladesh Test tour clashed with overseas T20 tournaments like The Hundred.

Despite the debate, Cummins has maintained that Test cricket remains his biggest priority. The Australian captain is set to miss upcoming white-ball tours of Pakistan and Bangladesh due to IPL playoff commitments and workload management ahead of a demanding Test schedule between 2026 and 2027.

Since Australia’s ODI World Cup triumph in 2023, Cummins has featured in only two ODIs and has not played a T20I since the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Cummins Opens Up On Injury Management And Workload

Cummins also provided a detailed update on his fitness and revealed why Australia’s medical team took a cautious approach to managing his recurring back issues.

“I actually feel really fresh for the last four months,” Cummins said. “I haven’t played as much. So physically, I feel as good as I have probably in six or seven years. I think a lot of the reason why I did probably miss longer than perhaps I could have was with the next 18 months in mind.”

The pacer explained that avoiding further stress-related injuries was crucial considering Australia’s packed Test schedule over the next two years.

“Stress fractures in your back do recur quite often and we just wanted to eliminate all that risk to make sure that if I had a problem in six months, that could rule me out of a lot of those 20 Tests. So physically, I feel great. My back’s fully healed, really strong. We took a very low-risk approach to the rehab to give myself the best chance to play all those Test matches.”

Australia are expected to play nearly 20 Tests between August 2026 and August 2027, including a major away series in India and an Ashes tour of England immediately after IPL 2027.
