Rovman Powell questions umpiring decisions and pitch conditions after KKR’s last-ball defeat to LSG in a thriller.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ overseas star Rovman Powell voiced concerns over a crucial umpiring decision that he termed a “blunder” following their narrow loss to Lucknow Super Giants.
The controversy arose during Finn Allen’s dismissal, where replays hinted at a possible boundary touch before the catch was completed. However, the on-field umpires chose not to review the decision, ruling it out clean.
“Definitely (more angles should have been looked at). We talked about that when he came off. We thought we had seen in the IPL that the umpires have gone upstairs for lesser things, and that are not as close as that,” Powell said in a post match press conference as quoted by The Hindu.
“Maybe it was a blunder on their part, but we’re not going to look into that and say that is what cost us two points tonight,” he added, refraining from placing full blame on the officials.
Mukul Choudhary’s Heroics Lauded By Powell
Despite being in deep trouble at 128/7 after 16 overs, Lucknow Super Giants pulled off a remarkable chase to win by three wickets on the final ball. The standout performer was youngster Mukul Choudhary, who delivered a match-winning unbeaten 54 off just 27 balls, smashing seven sixes and two boundaries.

Powell acknowledged the youngster’s brilliance while reflecting on KKR’s struggles at home.
“You want to make Eden Gardens your fortress, it’s your home with your fans behind you. It always feels good at home, but credit to the youngster (Mukul), he batted really well,” Powell said.
Sluggish Pitch and KKR’s Struggles Continue
Batting first after being put in, KKR managed 181/4, but the total proved insufficient on a pitch that offered assistance to bowlers. Powell highlighted that the surface was not conducive to free-flowing stroke play, making it difficult for batters to accelerate.
“It’s not that classic Eden Gardens wicket where you just go and turn around the strike and blast. It was not a 220-wicket; there was a little bit in it for the bowlers, especially when they used the slower balls.”
With just one point from four matches, KKR’s campaign has been underwhelming so far, including a washout against Punjab Kings. However, Powell remains hopeful about a turnaround as the tournament progresses.
“If you see the history, the winners of IPL build up in the middle and back end of the tournament. It’s not easy when you don’t start well, but our destiny is still in our hands. We still have 10 games left,” Powell concluded.
