Sanju Samson shines in T20 World Cup 2026 with a team-first approach under new leadership, now set to begin a fresh IPL journey with Chennai Super Kings.
Sanju Samson emerged as one of the standout performers for the India national cricket team during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, despite not being a regular starter at the beginning of the tournament.
Initially not part of the preferred XI, Samson got his opportunity during the group stage when Abhishek Sharma was sidelined due to illness. He then cemented his place in the must-win clash against Zimbabwe national cricket team and never looked back.
The wicketkeeper-batter went on to deliver match-winning performances, scoring crucial half-centuries against West Indies national cricket team in the Super 8s, followed by fifties in the semi-final against England national cricket team and the final versus
New Zealand national cricket team. He finished the tournament with 321 runs in five matches at an average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.38, earning the Player of the Tournament award.

Team-first philosophy under new leadership
Samson credited the leadership of captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir for instilling a team-first mindset within the squad.
“That’s the way everyone is thinking now. It was a conscious decision brought in by our captain and coach in the dressing room. The constant message from our leaders to the group is that the team should come first and individual milestones should come second,” Samson said during an interaction with the media recently.
“That automatically got drilled into each and every one of us in the team and that’s how we started reacting in every game,” he added.
He also highlighted how staying authentic to his natural game has helped him make a greater impact.
“Honestly, I think that’s the true nature. I never wanted to be selfless. I think I’ve always wanted to be myself. So myself brings a lot of different qualities, a lot of strengths and a lot of weaknesses,” he said.
New IPL chapter with Chennai Super Kings
Following his World Cup success, Samson is now set to begin a new journey in the Indian Premier League 2026 season with Chennai Super Kings.
The former Rajasthan Royals captain has been traded to CSK in a high-profile deal involving Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. With momentum on his side, Samson will be eager to carry his international form into the IPL and make an immediate impact for his new franchise.
