KKR assistant coach Shane Watson confirmed that Matheesha Pathirana’s IPL 2026 availability remains uncertain, calling it a “waiting game” as the pacer continues rehab.
Kolkata Knight Riders have been dealt an early concern ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, with their marquee signing Matheesha Pathirana set to miss the initial phase of the tournament.
The Sri Lankan pacer, who was picked for a hefty Rs 18 crore at the auction, is currently recovering from a calf strain and undergoing rehabilitation under the supervision of Sri Lanka Cricket.
Head coach Abhishek Nayar had earlier confirmed that Pathirana is expected to be available only from mid-April, ruling him out of the opening matches. His absence leaves a significant gap in KKR’s pace attack, especially given his reputation as a lethal death-over specialist.
Shane Watson Provides Key Update Before MI Clash
Speaking ahead of KKR’s season opener against Mumbai Indians, assistant coach Shane Watson acknowledged that the franchise is taking a cautious approach regarding Pathirana’s return. He highlighted that the team is working in close coordination with Sri Lanka’s medical setup to ensure the pacer’s full recovery.
“With Pathirana, obviously, it’s a waiting game at the moment. And we’re being guided by the Sri Lanka Cricket. And we are just doing everything we can to get him over here as soon as possible. Because of the calibre of support, the support staff, and the medical staff that we’ve got here at KKR.
We’ve got the same interests as Sri Lankan Cricket as well. We want Pathirana to be here. We want him to be fit. We certainly would never push him any earlier than he needs to,” Watson was quoted as saying at the pre-match press conference on Saturday.

KKR Prioritise Long-Term Fitness Over Quick Return
KKR’s management appears firm on not rushing Pathirana back into action, despite the high expectations surrounding his signing. The franchise understands the importance of having the pacer fully fit for the business end of the tournament rather than risking aggravation of the injury early on.
With the IPL being a long and demanding competition, KKR’s patient approach could prove beneficial in the long run. While fans may have to wait a little longer to see Pathirana in action, the team remains optimistic about his eventual impact once he returns to full fitness.
