Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter Tim David has landed in controversy following the franchise’s thrilling last-ball victory over Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026. The Australian all-rounder has now been officially penalised by the IPL Governing Council after his viral gesture during the match attracted massive attention on social media.

The advisory stated that David violated Article 2.6 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which relates to “using a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting.”

The statement further confirmed that the RCB batter accepted the sanction imposed by match referee Amit Sharma.

“Tim was found to have breached article 2.6 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which relates to “using a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting. Tim admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction imposed by Match Referee, Amit Sharma.”

Viral Celebration Video Sparked Massive Online Debate

The controversy began after a social media clip went viral shortly after RCB defeated Mumbai Indians in a dramatic final-ball finish. The footage appeared to show Tim David making a middle-finger gesture while celebrating from the dugout.

David, who was dismissed for a golden duck against his former franchise Mumbai Indians, still remained heavily involved in supporting the team during the chase. However, the gesture quickly became one of the biggest talking points after the match.

Tim David Endures Tough Match Despite RCB Victory

The match itself was a forgettable one for Tim David from a batting perspective. The hard-hitting finisher failed to open his account after getting dismissed for a golden duck against his former side.

Despite David’s failure with the bat, RCB managed to secure a thrilling win over Mumbai Indians in one of the closest contests of IPL 2026. The victory further strengthened Bengaluru’s position in the playoffs race as the Rajat Patidar-led side continued its strong campaign.
