Aakash Chopra questions Shreyas Iyer’s tactical call on Yuzvendra Chahal despite Punjab Kings’ successful 200-plus chase against CSK.
Shreyas Iyer may have led Punjab Kings to victory, but his captaincy decisions came under scrutiny after their clash against Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2026.
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra questioned Iyer’s decision to not complete Yuzvendra Chahal’s full quota of overs. The leg-spinner delivered an economical spell, conceding just 21 runs in three overs while picking up a wicket, yet he was not brought back for his fourth over and was eventually substituted out late in the innings.
“How did the only bowler who didn’t concede a single boundary not finish his quota of overs? The only spinner. The man is Yuzi Chahal. Yes, Dube was there. But didn’t (Ravindra) Jadeja dismiss him in Guwahati? 17 overs of pace meant one extra fielder inside the circle for the last 2 overs,” Chopra posted on X (formerly Twitter).
PBKS Overcome CSK Despite Tactical Debate
Despite the debate surrounding Iyer’s bowling changes, Punjab Kings managed to secure a convincing five-wicket win and climbed to the top of the points table. The team once again showcased their strength in chasing big totals, successfully overhauling a 200-plus target for the ninth time in IPL history.

Young batter Priyansh Arya provided a fiery start, smashing 33 runs off just 9 balls, setting the tone early in the chase. Meanwhile, Iyer played a composed yet impactful knock, accelerating brilliantly after a cautious start to bring up a half-century in just 26 balls.
Iyer Highlights Team Confidence and Dressing Room Mindset
After the match, Iyer credited the team’s aggressive approach and strong mindset, emphasizing the importance of internal belief over outside expectations.
“Obviously, there is a worry before getting onto the field. But the way we started today, I think it was an exceptional start. Priyansh and Prabh are doing the job at the start and setting the bench for us to go inside. I feel that the way they have been batting for years now stabilises the rhythm for us. I am glad that everyone is getting to bat in the first two games.
It gives us confidence. Whenever we are stuck in a pressure situation, people know how to go about it. It is not planned. But we just decided inside the dressing room that we want to impress each other rather than anyone outside. A certain sort of clarity as well,” said Iyer after the match.
