‘Captaincy Pressure Mounting’: Nayar Points to Suryakumar Yadav’s Poor Run in 2025

Former India coach Abhishek Nayar expressed concern over Suryakumar Yadav’s poor form, warning that his continued struggles as T20I captain could lead to internal scrutiny.

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has impressed as a leader, taking the team to their second T20 Asia Cup title earlier this year. However, his personal form remains a growing concern. In 2025, Yadav has scored only 100 runs from 12 matches, with no half-centuries and a modest strike rate of 105.

Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar noted that while team success often hides individual struggles, such inconsistency could attract internal scrutiny if results dip. Nayar also highlighted that Australian conditions might help Suryakumar regain his rhythm, given his aggressive stroke play.

“This Australian tour presents an interesting scenario. While team victories often overshadow individual performances, any downturn in results will raise questions. As India’s T20I Captain and someone who’s been the number one-ranked batter in T20I cricket for a long period of time, Suryakumar’s extended run without significant scores at number three will inevitably create internal scrutiny,” said Nayar via the JioStar show Game Plan.

“We know his calibre and impact potential, and Australian conditions with their bounce and pace should actually benefit his batting style. Ultimately, the biggest questions will come from within, as this current output doesn’t reflect his true capabilities,” he added.

Notably, Suryakumar Yadav has scored 2670 runs in 90 matches at an average above 35. With four centuries in under five years, he trails only Rohit Sharma, who retired in June 2024 with five hundreds, for most T20I centuries by an Indian batter.
