The T20I series starts five days after the T20 World Cup final on March 8. The ODI leg ends one day before the IPL and PSL begin on March 26, creating scheduling challenges.

This will be only the second bilateral T20I series between the teams, after their first in February 2024. It will be their fourth ODI series following meetings in 2022, 2023, and 2024.

Meanwhile, in the ongoing T20 World Cup, Afghanistan exited the group stage after two defeats. They beat Canada by 82 runs after scoring 200. They also chased 161 against UAE to win by five wickets. Losses to South Africa and New Zealand ended their Super 8 hopes.
Sri Lanka lost only once in the group stage, against Zimbabwe. They defeated Australia, Oman and Ireland. They later lost to England in the Super 8 and next face Pakistan and New Zealand.
