Ajit Agarkar has requested a contract extension until the 2027 ODI World Cup, with the BCCI yet to take a final decision.
Ajit Agarkar, the current chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee, has reportedly requested an extension of his tenure until the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027. Agarkar, who took over the role in 2023, had previously received a one-year extension ahead of IPL 2025.
As per reports, the BCCI has already discussed the request internally, although a final decision is still pending. The current selection panel includes Pragyan Ojha, RP Singh, Ajay Ratra, and Shiv Sundar Das.
During Agarkar’s tenure, India national cricket team has experienced both remarkable highs and challenging setbacks. The team secured three ICC titles, including back-to-back ICC Men’s T20 World Cup victories and an ICC Champions Trophy title, while also finishing runners-up in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

However, the period has not been without disappointments. India suffered rare home Test series defeats against New Zealand national cricket team and South Africa national cricket team, and also failed to reach the final of the ICC World Test Championship for the first time in the 2023–25 cycle.
Leadership calls and Gambhir’s backing
Agarkar has played a key role in shaping the team’s transition phase, overseeing major retirements including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepping away from Tests and T20Is, along with Ravichandran Ashwin retiring from international cricket.
One of his boldest decisions was appointing Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain, even with Hardik Pandya in contention for the role.
“One of the main issues discussed was that you want a captain who’s likely to play all the games. We think he is a deserving candidate”, said Agarkar while explaining the decision to name Suryakumar as the captain.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir also publicly acknowledged Agarkar’s contributions following the team’s T20 World Cup triumph.
“I think I should dedicate this trophy to Ajit Agarkar, because he does take a lot of flak and I’m thankful for the amount of honesty he’s worked with”, Gambhir said.
With his contract extension still under consideration, the coming months could prove crucial in determining Agarkar’s continued role in shaping India’s cricketing future.
