Amit Mishra sets the record straight, highlighting Dhoni’s constant support as the reason for his multiple comebacks to the Indian team.
Amit Mishra has firmly denied any talk of a past conflict with former captain MS Dhoni. Instead, the retired leg-spinner credits Dhoni for his repeated selections in the national team. Mishra entered the Indian side under Dhoni’s leadership and believes the captain’s faith was key to his sustained opportunities, choosing to view their relationship in a positive light.
“People say if Dhoni was not there, my career would have been better. But who knows, if he was not there, maybe I would not have even been in the team. I came into the side under him only. And I kept making a comeback. He would have agreed as a captain and that is why I kept coming back. There is a positive way to look at things,” shared Mishra.
He recalled a specific instance of Dhoni’s guidance during a tight ODI against New Zealand in 2016, which was Mishra’s final ODI series.

“After two overs, Dhoni came to me and told me that I wasn’t bowling what I naturally bowl. He told me not to think a lot and bowl what I always do. I did that and got a wicket. It was a game-changing spell. I picked up five wickets and I think that was my best spell. This is how he supported me,” he added.
Mishra, who announced his retirement in September, played 68 international matches across formats. He is widely celebrated for his highly successful IPL career, where he took 174 wickets.
