R Ashwin Revives Virat Kohli’s Call for Permanent Test Centers to Strengthen India’s Home Advantage

Ravichandran Ashwin reignited the debate over establishing five fixed Test centers in India, stressing that familiar venues would strengthen the team’s home advantage.

Following head coach Gautam Gambhir’s criticism of the Delhi Test pitch, veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has renewed the demand for establishing permanent Test match venues in India, echoing previous appeals from cricketers like Virat Kohli. The recently retired star believes designating specific grounds for Test cricket would significantly enhance India’s home advantage.

Ashwin’s comments came in response to Gambhir’s dissatisfaction with the Arun Jaitley Stadium surface during the West Indies Test, where the coach had described the lack of carry for pacers as “alarming.” On his YouTube show ‘Ash ki Baat,’ Ashwin elaborated on the challenges posed by India’s varied playing conditions.

“Test centres is not about crowds alone,” Ashwin explained. “It is also about familiarity of conditions. The problem in India is every surface has a different identity. There is literally no bounce in the Eastern part of the country. It becomes a very ordinary Test match pitch then.”

The seasoned campaigner emphasized that true home advantage comes from familiarity. “Make sure whichever Test center you decide has the best pitches. Some venues are better than others only because the pitches are better and the team is used to the conditions. Otherwise, you are playing within that Indian map as home, but it is not home,” he asserted.

Ashwin’s proposal aligns with Kohli’s 2019 stance that while rotation works for limited-overs cricket, Tests should be confined to select venues. “Virat said years ago they must be fixed. I personally think it’s about time… Guwahati as a Test match is not a home game for either team, and I don’t think anyone in the Indian team has played a first-class game in Guwahati,” Ashwin noted, highlighting how unfamiliar conditions neutralize home advantage.

The concept of fixed Test centers mirrors systems successfully implemented in cricket nations like Australia and South Africa, where consistent pitch characteristics over decades have helped teams maximize their home conditions. This renewed discussion comes amid ongoing debates about pitch quality and the need to preserve Test cricket’s competitive balance.
