Ravichandran Ashwin hints that Sanju Samson could eventually take over CSK captaincy amid Dhoni’s nearing retirement.
Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes that Sanju Samson could one day lead Chennai Super Kings, though he remains uncertain about the timeline. Speaking about the leadership dynamics, Ashwin suggested that such decisions are often influenced by narratives within the game, especially when it comes to succession planning after legends like MS Dhoni.
Sharing his thoughts, he said, “I do see Samson captaining CSK at some stage. Don’t know when, but I do see that happening. Whether we agree or not, a lot of these things do happen with respect to narratives. But I don’t want Sanju to step into anybody’s shoes. You don’t really have to step into anybody’s legacy. He’s got his own unique clothing, which he lives under, and I would like to see his own imprint on it.”
Leadership Pressure on Gaikwad and Dhoni Factor
Current CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has faced a challenging start to his captaincy tenure. Taking over from Dhoni, who led the franchise to five IPL titles, was always going to be a demanding task. Under Gaikwad, CSK are yet to make a strong impact in terms of playoff appearances, and his contributions, although valuable with the bat, have often been overshadowed by Dhoni’s enduring presence.
From a franchise perspective, the transition is crucial. Dhoni, now 44, is nearing the end of his career and has been dealing with fitness concerns. His deep connection with fans makes the leadership shift even more sensitive, prompting discussions about a long-term successor.

Sanju Samson’s Growing Case as Captaincy Option
Samson’s inclusion in the CSK setup, following his move from Rajasthan Royals, has strengthened conversations around leadership alternatives. Known for his calm demeanor and prior captaincy experience, including leading Rajasthan to an IPL final, Samson has already impressed with performances such as his century against Delhi Capitals.
Ashwin also praised Samson’s leadership qualities off the field, stating, “Him (Samson) being in a good space allows him to make good calls. He’s had very good days, he’s had ordinary days as well. But the one thing that Sanju does, which I haven’t seen in many leaders, is he is able to take feedback. The second thing that he is good is that he has a humane connection. He would be able to have conversations with players that can be very personal,”
With Gaikwad struggling for consistency this season and Samson steadily building his case, the debate around CSK’s future captaincy appears to be gaining momentum.
