Chennai Super Kings made a bold tactical move during their IPL 2026 match against Delhi Capitals, retiring-out Ayush Mhatre at a key stage. The decision came in the 18th over with CSK at 175/2.
Mhatre scored 59 off 36 balls but struggled to increase the scoring rate against Lungi Ngidi and T Natarajan. With quick runs needed, the team sent Shivam Dube to accelerate in the final overs.

After the match, Mhatre revealed the strategy behind his retire-out call. He said the team needed big hits and accepted the decision, adding that such calls remain part of the game strategy. Mhatre also highlighted the positive team environment, stating that the franchise offers strong support and a family-like atmosphere.
“There was nothing much. I was batting and the team needed some big shots. Shivam also can hit big shots. I wasn’t really getting it going, so the team planned it that way. It happens in the game,” Mhatre explained after the match on Star Sports.
“It’s very different and feels like a family for me. They treat me like a kid, so I really enjoy playing with them. The support staff is also helping a lot and working hard for us,” he added.
In the match, Chennai Super Kings built a strong platform through a key partnership between Ayush Mhatre and Sanju Samson. The duo added 113 runs for the second wicket, steadying the innings after an early loss.
Shivam Dube then accelerated in the final overs, helping CSK finish at 212/2. The total proved enough as CSK bowled out Delhi Capitals for 189, sealing a 23-run win.
