Bangladesh Cricketers Warn of Boycott if BCB Official Najmul Islam Stays

The Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh has demanded the immediate resignation of BCB finance committee chairman Najmul Islam, warning of a complete boycott of cricketing activities.

The Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh(CWAB) has issued a strong warning to the Bangladesh Cricket Board over recent remarks by Najmul Islam. Bangladesh cricketers said all professionals will boycott cricket activities if Najmul does not step down before the Bangladesh Premier League match on Thursday, January 15.

The ultimatum follows comments made by Najmul, the BCB finance committee chairman, which triggered anger. He suggested that players alone would face financial losses if participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup were affected. He also indicated that the board would not cover any loss of earnings.

CWAB president Mohammad Mithun announced the decision after an emergency online meeting on Wednesday night. He said the remarks damaged trust and morale among players. CWAB said players are ready to act collectively, and boycott if their demand remains unmet.

“The words that the board director has used about the players are completely unacceptable to the players. It has deeply hurt the entire body of cricketers. We have even given the board a lot of time on the First Division, and still we haven’t seen any positive result. And the words that this board director is repeatedly using have deeply hurt the entire cricket community, and the players are in no way willing to accept this,” Mithun was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

“So if he does not resign before tomorrow’s match, then from tomorrow onward we(Bangladesh Cricketers) are announcing a boycott of all cricket activities,” he added.

BCB Issues Clarification Amid Escalating Tensions

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Cricket Board also issued a statement on Wednesday. The board expressed regret over the remarks made by Najmul earlier in the day. It acknowledged that the comments caused offence within the cricketing community.

The BCB clarified that the remarks did not reflect its official position or policy. It stressed that players remain central to Bangladesh cricket operations. The board also reaffirmed its support for professional cricketers at all levels.
