Bangladesh postpone Ireland tour as BCB targets hosting India for a crucial white-ball series ahead of World Cup qualification.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to postpone its scheduled tour of Ireland in September, shifting its focus toward hosting India for a rescheduled white-ball series during the same window. According to reports, this move comes after India’s previously planned 2025 tour was deferred, creating an opportunity for Bangladesh to accommodate the high-profile series later this year.
Cricket Ireland, which had already announced its full 2026 schedule, was approached by the BCB regarding a possible rescheduling. However, the Irish board reportedly communicated that adjusting the fixtures within the same year would not be feasible.
Rescheduling Challenges and Official Confirmation
With both boards unable to find an alternative window in 2026, the decision was mutually taken to defer the Ireland tour. A BCB official confirmed the development, stating, “When the India series was moved from last year to this September, we asked them (Cricket Ireland) if they could accommodate us at another time in 2026, but they said they were unable to do so. So the tour has been postponed.”
The official further added, “They also had some other issues, so we decided to work together to find a new window for the Ireland tour, hopefully sometime next year (2027).”
Meanwhile, the revised India tour is set to begin on August 28, featuring a three-match ODI series followed by three T20Is. The ODIs are scheduled for September 1, 3, and 6, while the T20Is will be played on September 9, 12, and 13.
World Cup Qualification Stakes for Bangladesh
The postponement could have broader implications for Bangladesh’s preparation ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup qualification. Currently placed ninth in the ICC ODI rankings with 79 rating points, Bangladesh must break into the top eight by March 31, 2027, to secure direct qualification.
Failure to do so would mean entering the qualification tournament, adding pressure on the team’s upcoming fixtures. With the Ireland tour delayed, Bangladesh are now expected to host teams like New Zealand, Australia, and India, while also touring South Africa and Zimbabwe.

However, uncertainty still looms over the India series due to pending government clearance amid diplomatic sensitivities. If that tour also faces delays, Bangladesh could end up with limited ODI opportunities before the crucial qualification deadline.
