TNCA confirmed that it received a proposal to host the BBL season opener in Chennai and said the final decision rests with the BCCI.
The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has confirmed that it received a proposal to host the opening match of the Big Bash League (BBL) in Chennai. A delegation from Cricket Australia (CA) met TNCA officials a few days ago to explore the possibility of staging the BBL opener at Chepauk.
Sources said the TNCA has left the final decision to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). A senior TNCA official shared details of the meeting with an Australian delegation. The group, which included two representatives from the BBL and one official from CA, visited Chennai late last week to discuss the proposal.
“We have heard their proposal and are fully aware of our jurisdiction. The TNCA has left the matter to the BCCI. We have made it clear to the Australian delegation that without BCCI approval, the plan cannot move forward,” a TNCA official said. The ball is in the BCCI court.”
BBL Match To Take Place in December
If the BCCI approves the plan, the match could take place in December this year. However, there has been no indication so far from the Indian board. It is understood that the BCCI is carefully reviewing the overall situation before making a final decision. As of Tuesday (February 17), the BCCI had not responded to the TNCA.
Australian media outlet SEN reported that the move is part of a larger plan. “The bold ambition is part of a wider strategy to intertwine the lucrative Indian market with the BBL ahead of a near-certain sale for at least two of its eight franchises,” the report stated.

The report also suggested that the Perth Scorchers could be one of the two teams to feature in the proposed Chennai fixture, if approved. The Western Australian city is only two-and-a-half hours ahead of Indian Standard Time, making scheduling easier.
In addition, the Scorchers are the defending champions and would be strong contenders to play in the season opener. However, unlike the Indian Premier League (IPL), the BBL does not follow the tradition of starting the season with the defending champions.
