Andrew Flintoff Set To Become Sydney Thunder Coach In Major BBL Shake-Up

Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is reportedly set to become Sydney Thunder’s new BBL coach after the franchise parted ways with Trevor Bayliss.

Sydney Thunder are reportedly set to appoint former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff as their new head coach ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League season. According to reports from Code Sports, Flintoff has won the race to take charge of the franchise and an official confirmation is expected soon.

Thunder began their search for a new mentor after ending their association with Trevor Bayliss. The former England coach spent five seasons with the franchise and guided the side to the BBL final in 2024-25. However, Thunder also endured disappointing campaigns under him, finishing at the bottom of the table in both the 2023-24 and 2025-26 seasons.

Following Bayliss’ exit, Thunder general manager Trent Copeland had stated that the franchise wanted a “world-class T20 coach” to lead the side into a new era, and as per ESPNCricinfo, the management now appears to have settled on Flintoff.

Flintoff’s Coaching Journey And Franchise Experience

Flintoff has steadily built his coaching profile over the past year. The former England star has worked closely with the England Lions setup and also led the England A side during their tour of Australia that ran alongside the Ashes series last summer.

He also briefly served as a consultant with England’s white-ball teams during Matthew Mott’s tenure. Despite that involvement, Flintoff’s franchise coaching experience remains limited.

The 47-year-old spent two seasons coaching Northern Superchargers in The Hundred during the 2024 and 2025 editions. Under his leadership, the side finished fourth and third respectively. However, Flintoff will not return to the franchise after failing to agree to terms with the team’s new Indian owners, Sun Group, who have since renamed the side Sunrisers Leeds.

Interestingly, Flintoff had earlier admitted that coaching was never part of his original plans. Speaking on the Beard Before Wicket podcast last October, he revealed that former Superchargers director of cricket and current England selector Marcus North had approached him unexpectedly regarding the role.

David Warner’s Future And NSW Coaching Restructure

One of Flintoff’s first major decisions at Sydney Thunder could revolve around David Warner’s captaincy future. Warner was charged with drink driving in April and is expected to plead guilty when the matter returns to court on June 24.

Flintoff is no stranger to the Big Bash League either. He previously played for Brisbane Heat during the 2014-15 BBL season. Although he featured in only seven matches, that stint turned out to be the final chapter of his professional playing career spanning two decades.

Meanwhile, Cricket New South Wales have continued reshaping their coaching structure across multiple programs. Earlier this month, James Hopes was appointed as Sydney Sixers head coach, while Brad Haddin took charge of the NSW state side after Greg Shipperd departed despite still having a year left on his contract.

NSW have also announced new assistant coaches for the state setup under Haddin, with former Australia ODI batter Peter Forrest and ex-NSW wicketkeeper-batter Daniel Smith joining the coaching staff after successful stints in Sydney premier cricket.
