BCCI Likely to Extend Ajit Agarkar’s Tenure Ahead of 2027 World Cup | Reports

BCCI is set to extend Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as India’s chief selector till June 2027, prioritizing continuity ahead of the ODI World Cup and backing his bold selection decisions.

Ajit Agarkar is reportedly set to continue his tenure as BCCI Chairman of Selectors until June 2027. He assumed the role in July 2023 and guided India through a successful period.

India reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final under his tenure. The team also secured T20 World Cup titles in 2024 and 2026. They added the 2025 Champions Trophy to their achievements.

According to reportes from The Indian Express, BCCI preferred continuity ahead of the ODI World Cup in October and November next year. Selectors like RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha has not completed 1 year.

Under Agarkar’s tenure, the team had a seamless transition and was fearless in taking bold decisions. The board felt he should continue. The BCCI officer bearers will be speaking to him on the sidelines of IPL games to update him,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying.

Agarkar played a key role in major decisions. He appointed Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain. He also recalled Ishan Kishan for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Earlier, Ajit Agarkar also managed a challenging phase in India’s Test setup. India lost 3-0 to New Zealand in 2024 and 2-0 to South Africa in 2025, raising concerns over spin performance at home. His tenure also saw retirements of R Ashwin, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
