BCCI Backs ICC After Pakistan Boycotts India Match at T20 World Cup

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said the board agrees with the ICC after Pakistan decided to boycott the India match at the T20 World Cup.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) has backed the International Cricket Council’s(ICC) position on Pakistan’s decision to boycott the T20 World Cup match against India on February 15 in Colombo. BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said the board would avoid detailed comment for now but confirmed full alignment with the ICC’s view.

The development follows an announcement from the Pakistan government on Sunday evening stating that the men’s team would not take the field against India in the 20-team tournament. No official reason was provided. The move is widely seen as linked to Pakistan’s support for Bangladesh, which was removed from the competition after refusing to tour India due to security concerns.

Soon after the announcement, the ICC released a statement urging Pakistan to reconsider the decision. The global body warned that such a move could have long-term consequences for Pakistan cricket.

Shukla said the BCCI respects the ICC’s stance and will hold further discussions before making any independent comment.

“The ICC has issued a big statement on this subject. It has highlighted the element of sportsmanship. We completely agree with the ICC. The Board of Control for Cricket in India will not make any comment until we speak to the ICC,” Shukla told reporters on Monday.

If Pakistan refuses to play the match, India will receive two points, while Pakistan’s net run rate will take a major hit. The outcome could influence qualification from the group stage.

The ICC has indicated that failing to play could invite serious sanctions, including effects on future bilateral cricket. The governing body has also said no formal notice has been received from the PCB.
