Security concerns lead to the cancellation of the BPL’s opening ceremony, though the tournament will proceed as scheduled.
The opening ceremony of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) has been called off due to security reasons. The tournament will still begin on December 26 in Sylhet as planned, but the grand ceremony originally set for December 24 in Dhaka will not take place.
This decision follows discussions with government advisors, considering the heightened political environment ahead of national elections next year. The board has decided to focus its efforts entirely on ensuring the cricket matches are conducted smoothly.
“We won’t do an opening ceremony because the overall situation of the country plus security is a big factor here. Our job is to make sure the cricket matches run well. So, we are keeping focus on all sides. But at this moment, we are paying more attention to cricket,” BCB president Aminul Islam said.

In an official statement, the BPL Governing Council confirmed the move was based on government guidance. “Aligned with the current advice from the Bangladesh Government on mass gatherings, and with the objective of ensuring maximum protection for everyone concerned, the BPL Governing Council has decided not to organize any pre-event function or opening ceremony involving large crowds,” the council stated.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to the tournament’s success, adding that it is “focused on ensuring a secure and well-managed environment for players, spectators, match officials and all stakeholders.”
