The ECB is reported to be preparing an ultimatum for Brendon McCullum, with his future as England’s Test coach.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is reportedly preparing an ‘ultimatum’ for England men’s head coach Brendon McCullum, putting his Test role under serious threat scrutiny. According to The Telegraph, the board is set to ask McCullum to make “major changes to the team’s environment and culture”, with his response likely to decide whether he continues in the role for the upcoming season.
Pressure has been mounting on McCullum, captain Ben Stokes, and England’s director of cricket Rob Key following England’s struggles in the ongoing fifth Test in Sydney. England lost the Ashes inside a record 11 days after suffering defeats in the first three Tests. Although they responded with a memorable win in Melbourne, their first in Australia in over a decade — they now appear on course for a 4-1 series defeat.
The report suggested that among the three, Stokes’ position remains the safest, and his views during the post-series review could play a decisive role in determining McCullum’s future. Publicly, however, the England captain has strongly backed his head coach.
“There is no doubt in my mind that Brendon and I are the right people to carry on doing this for the near future. I have thoroughly enjoyed the time I have worked with Brendon. I cannot see there being someone else who I could take this team with from where we are now to even bigger heights,” Stokes was quoted as saying ahead of the Sydney Test.
“So for us as captain and coach, when we do have the time off, we need to put our heads together and go, What is it that we think we need to do to go to the next level?” he added.

Reports further indicated that the ECB is keen to introduce greater professionalism within the team setup. Both McCullum and Key had earlier admitted that England were underprepared for the Ashes, and the board is now considering the addition of more specialist coaches in support roles. This would mark a shift away from the more relaxed, one-man coaching approach that has defined McCullum’s tenure so far.
A further concern for the ECB is that McCullum also serves as England’s white-ball coach. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his Test role, he is expected to continue overseeing the limited-overs teams, at least until the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2026.
