England’s Ashes defeat had triggered intense scrutiny, with Brendon McCullum defending his players amid drinking allegations.
England’s Test team came under heavy criticism following a 4-1 Ashes humiliation against Australia, with fresh controversy emerging around reports of players allegedly going on a drinking spree during a four-day break at the Noosa resort between the second and third Tests. The situation added pressure on head coach Brendon McCullum and his aggressive approach to the game.
Amid growing scrutiny, McCullum strongly defended the team’s decision to take the break and dismissed suggestions of excessive drinking. He said several players in the squad were not regular drinkers and described the situation as being blown out of proportion.
“Half our guys don’t have a drink, to be honest. They’ll have a couple of beers every now and again. I think people do that in most walks of life,” McCullum said after England’s defeat in the fifth Test.

The controversy escalated after the third Test when reports claimed that some England players may have spent up to six days drinking during the nine-day gap between the second and third Tests. Matters worsened after a video of opener Ben Duckett, allegedly intoxicated and struggling to find his way home, went viral on social media. England managing director Rob Key later confirmed that the team would investigate the reports.
Interestingly, England’s only win of the series came in the fourth Test in Melbourne, which followed closely after the reported drinking episode.
Meanwhile, former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen weighed in on the situation and called for changes in the national coaching setup. The 41-year-old backed former England head coach Andy Flower as a possible replacement for McCullum.
