ECB To Begin Thorough Review After 4-1 Ashes Defeat In Australia

Ben Stokes Promises England Recalibration, Warns Underperformers of ‘Ruthless Side’

England’s cricket board had started a full review of the Ashes campaign after the team suffered a 4-1 Test series defeat in Australia.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has begun a detailed review of England’s disappointing Ashes tour of Australia, where the visitors lost the five-match Test series 4-1. England’s only win came in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, their first Test victory in Australia since 2011.

However, the win offered little consolation, as the series had already slipped out of reach by then and England were only playing to reduce the margin of defeat.

Australia sealed the series with a strong comeback in the fifth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, which concluded on Thursday. Despite not having their full-strength pace attack throughout the series, the hosts dominated England to retain the Ashes convincingly.

While England’s on-field struggles were widely analysed, their off-field conduct also came under scrutiny. During the break between the second and third Tests, videos of England players socialising and drinking in Noosa during a four-day gap went viral on social media, adding to the criticism surrounding the tour.

ECB Chief Confirms Review In Process

ECB Chief Executive Officer Richard Gould confirmed that a comprehensive review is already in progress. “We will take many lessons from this tour and are determined to improve quickly. Our focus is on regaining the Ashes in 2027,” Gould said in a statement on Thursday. “A thorough review of the campaign is already underway. This will cover tour planning and preparation, individual performance and behaviours, and our ability to adapt and respond effectively as circumstances require.”

Gould described the tour as a major disappointment, given the expectations going into the series. “This Ashes tour began with significant hope and anticipation, and it is therefore deeply disappointing that we have been unable to fulfil our ambition of winning the Ashes in Australia,” he said.

“While there were moments of strong performance and resilience during the series, including a hard-fought victory in the fourth Test in Melbourne, we were not consistent enough across all conditions and phases of the contest, and Australia ultimately deserved to retain the Ashes,” Gould added.
