Brendon McCullum avoided dismissal as England’s head coach after the team’s narrow semifinal defeat to India in the T20 World Cup 2026, with the ECB also set to retain director Rob Key.
England’s all-format men’s head coach Brendon McCullum is set to keep his position despite England’s seven-run defeat to India in the semifinal of the 2026 T20 World Cup. According to a report by the BBC, England men’s cricket director Rob Key is also expected to continue in his role.
McCullum had faced intense scrutiny earlier after England suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Australia in the 2025–26 Ashes series. The loss was seen as a crucial moment that could determine his future as coach. Although England managed to win their first Test in Australia in more than a decade during that tour, several off-field issues created controversy.
Reports suggested that players took mid-series trips that resembled vacations and included heavy drinking. There were also concerns about a lack of seriousness during warm-up sessions. These incidents were strongly criticised by cricket experts and media outlets in England.

Some off-field controversies further added to the pressure on the team management. Harry Brook was reportedly involved in an altercation with a nightclub bouncer during a tour of New Zealand just before the Ashes. During the Ashes itself, Ben Duckett was filmed in an intoxicated state asking for help to return to his hotel.
Many observers partly blamed McCullum for these incidents, pointing to his relaxed approach toward off-field behaviour. Critics also questioned England’s tendency to waste strong batting positions in matches, which some attributed to the team’s coaching strategy.
Despite the criticism, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided not to remove McCullum before the T20 World Cup. One key reason was that he was already leading the side in the global tournament.
Under captain Harry Brook, England performed well in the competition. The team lost only one match in the first two rounds and put up a strong fight against India in the semifinal played at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, eventually losing by just seven runs.
