Brett Lee Suggests SCG Test Could Be Perfect Farewell for Usman Khawaja

Brett Lee opined that the final Ashes Test at the SCG could be a fitting moment for Usman Khawaja to retire, with Australia playing at home and aiming for a 4-1 series win.

Former Australia fast bowler Brett Lee believes the upcoming Sydney Test could be a meaningful final chapter for Usman Khawaja if he chooses to step away from international cricket. The fifth and final Test of the Ashes 2025-26 will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Khawaja’s home venue.

Brett Lee feels playing in front of a home crowd, with Australia pushing for a 4-1 series win, would offer a fitting farewell. He also praised Khawaja’s long-term contribution and described him as one of Australia’s most influential batters in recent years.

“That’ll be up to him, but it’d be a special way for him to go out, wouldn’t it? Home ground, a chance to win 4-1, but we’ll wait and see in a couple of days. Just a couple of weeks ago, he was, and has been, one of Australia’s greatest batters,” Brett Lee was quoted as saying by The Roar.

“He’s in the team because of what he’s achieved, and he wasn’t left out due to form. He was left out because of his injury to his back. I don’t know what’s going on in his life, in terms of his professional cricket life, but all I can say is that he’s been instrumental for Australia. He’s been such a great role model for young kids coming through,” he added.

Notably, Usman Khawaja had a difficult Test season in 2025, with limited returns across the year. His standout match came with scores of 232 against Sri Lanka in January and 82 against England in December. Outside those innings, consistency has been an issue. Meanwhile, Khawaja has not commented publicly on retirement plans, despite growing discussion among fans and experts.
