Delhi Capitals Sign Rehan Ahmed as Replacement for Ben Duckett in IPL 2026

Delhi Capitals bolster their spin attack by signing Rehan Ahmed as Ben Duckett’s replacement for the remainder of IPL 2026.

Delhi Capitals have officially announced the signing of Rehan Ahmed as a replacement for Ben Duckett for the remainder of the Indian Premier League 2026 season. The young English leg-spinner joins the franchise for a fee of INR 75 lakh, bringing a fresh dynamic to the squad midway through the campaign.

Duckett, who was acquired by Delhi Capitals for ₹2 crore during the IPL 2026 auction, withdrew from the tournament on March 24, just days before the season commenced. The left-handed batter cited the need to refocus on his England career, particularly in red-ball cricket, following a disappointing Ashes campaign where he struggled for consistency.

The decision, however, came with consequences. As Duckett pulled out without a medically verified injury, IPL regulations impose a two-season ban on participation in both the league and future auctions. This makes him ineligible to return to the tournament until 2029. Despite issuing an apology to the franchise and fans, the late withdrawal left Delhi Capitals scrambling for a suitable replacement.

How Rehan Ahmed Is An Intelligent Investment For Delhi Capitals?

In Rehan Ahmed, Delhi Capitals have opted for a strategic shift rather than a like-for-like batting replacement. The 20-year-old leg-spinner has already made a mark on the international stage, representing England across formats and picking up 49 wickets in 5 Tests, 9 ODIs, and 13 T20Is. Known for his sharp googlies and attacking mindset, Rehan adds a potent wicket-taking option to the Capitals’ bowling unit.

His inclusion is expected to significantly bolster Delhi’s spin department, especially alongside Kuldeep Yadav. The combination of two wrist-spinners could prove lethal on slower, turning tracks like the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Rehan’s ability to break partnerships in the middle overs gives captain Axar Patel greater tactical flexibility, allowing him to deploy his resources more effectively.

While Rehan does not directly replace Duckett’s top-order batting firepower, he brings added depth with the bat in the lower order. With a T20 strike rate of over 120, he is capable of contributing quick runs in the death overs, offering balance to the side in crunch situations.

However, his inclusion also presents a selection dilemma. As an overseas player, Rehan will have to compete for a spot in the playing XI with other international stars in the squad. His chances of featuring regularly may depend on pitch conditions, particularly favoring spin-friendly surfaces.
