South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Donovan Ferreira has suffered a shoulder fracture during an SA20 match for Joburg Super Kings, placing his T20 World Cup 2026 participation in doubt.
Donovan Ferreira faces a tight recovery window for the ICC T20 World Cup after a shoulder injury in the SA20 2025–26 season. The incident occurred on Saturday, January 17, during Joburg Super Kings’ match against Pretoria Capitals.
Ferreira dived at cover to stop a boundary on the final ball. He landed awkwardly on his left shoulder. The ball still reached the rope. He later came out to bat as stand-in captain due to Faf du Plessis’ thumb injury. Ferreira faced one delivery before retiring hurt.
Reports indicate a fracture, confirmed after initial assessment. Scans were scheduled for Sunday, January 18. The injury rules him out of the remaining SA20 matches. The Super Kings must beat Paarl Royals on Monday, January 18, to reach the playoffs. Jarren Bacher replaces Ferreira in the squad.

According to ESPNCricinfo, the setback may affect South Africa’s plans for the T20 World Cup. Ferreira was picked for his role as a finisher, reserve wicketkeeper, and part-time bowler. The selectors may consider Ryan Rickelton, who has two SA20 centuries and keeps wickets, but opens the batting. Tristan Stubbs and Matthew Breetzke are also options.
South Africa continue to manage multiple fitness concerns before the ICC event. Tony de Zorzi is recovering from a hamstring injury suffered in December and is expected to play the three T20Is against West Indies later this month. Selection debates persist after SA20’s leading wicket-taker Ottneil Baartman missed out due to a pace-heavy squad.
