‘Schedule Is Full’: ECB Turns Down Euro Nations Cup Proposal

ECB rejected Cricket Ireland’s Euro Nations Cup proposal, citing a jam-packed schedule.

England and Wales Cricket Board(ECB) chief Richard Gould ruled out immediate plans for a Europe-wide tournament. He cited a packed international calendar as the main reason.

Cricket Ireland chief Brian MacNeice had put forward the Euro Nations Cup proposal. The plan aimed to launch men’s and women’s events by 2027. He had held discussions with multiple stakeholders to advance the idea.

Gould acknowledged the concept but avoided adding new commitments. England’s schedule already includes extensive bilateral and global fixtures. However, the ECB reportedly remains open to future talks under certain conditions. Broadcaster interest could influence any reconsideration.

“It’s a very nice idea. [But] our schedule is absolutely jam-packed, and we’re not looking to add to our schedule,” Gould said, speaking at the ECB’s domestic season launch at Lord’s.

ECB Remains Positive Despite Criticism

Despite recent criticism from players, management maintains a positive outlook. Gould also accepted player frustration after selection calls. He believes such reactions reflect competitiveness.

“I really don’t agree with that. The start of a new season is always an exciting juncture. All of our metrics are up and positive. Yes, we’ve had a difficult winter, but that’s a road bump that we will get over,” he said.

“When players come out of the England fold, it’s difficult for them. It’s difficult for any player when they get dropped in any sport and they will not agree with the decision. I wouldn’t want them to agree with the decision. These are competitive men and women seeking to play at the highest standard for as long as they can,” Gould added.

The England men have a packed calendar, with a 3-match Test series against New Zealand and Pakistan, as well as white-ball tours of India and Sri Lanka. The women are preparing to host the 2026 T20 World Cup during the summer. The Hundred is also slotted into the same window, adding further workload.
