T20 World Cup 2026 | England Attack Destroy Sri Lanka As Latter Topple In Front of Paltry Chase

Will Jacks’ all-round brilliance powered England to a dominant 51-run victory over Sri Lanka in their Super Eights clash at Pallekele.

England produced a clinical all-round display to defeat Sri Lanka by 51 runs in the 42nd Match of the Super Eights, Group 2, at Pallekele on February 22 in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

After being asked to bat, England posted 146/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Phil Salt anchored the innings with a well-made 62 off 40 balls, striking six fours and two sixes at a strike rate of 155.00.

However, England lost wickets at regular intervals. Jos Buttler fell early for 7, while Jacob Bethell and Tom Banton failed to convert their starts. Captain Harry Brook chipped in with a quick 14 off 7 balls before becoming Dunith Wellalage’s third victim.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers kept the pressure on throughout. Wellalage was the pick of the attack with figures of 3/26, while Maheesh Theekshana claimed 2/21 and Dilshan Madushanka picked up 2/25. Will Jacks added late impetus with a brisk 21 off 14 balls, helping England reach a competitive total despite losing nine wickets.

In reply, Sri Lanka’s chase never gained momentum. Jofra Archer struck twice early to remove Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara, reducing the hosts to 15/2. The slide continued as Will Jacks turned the game decisively in England’s favour with a superb spell of 3/22, dismissing Kusal Mendis, Pavan Rathnayake, and Wellalage in quick succession.

Sri Lanka slumped to 34/5 inside the powerplay and never recovered. Dasun Shanaka fought back with a determined 30 off 24 balls, but lacked support from the other end. Liam Dawson (2/27) and Adil Rashid (2/13) tightened the screws in the middle overs, while Jamie Overton chipped in with one wicket. Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 95 in 16.4 overs, handing England a convincing 51-run victory.
