Former Afghanistan pacer Shapoor Zadran has been admitted to a Delhi ICU after being diagnosed with HLH, a rare and life-threatening immune disorder affecting vital organs.
Former Afghanistan pacer Shapoor Zadran is receiving treatment in a New Delhi hospital after a serious diagnosis. The 38-year-old is suffering from haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a rare condition that affects the immune system.
Doctors admitted him to the ICU as his condition reached an advanced stage. The illness causes severe inflammation and can damage organs like the liver, bone marrow, spleen, and lymph nodes.
Zadran earlier played 80 international matches, including 44 ODIs and 36 T20Is, between 2009 and 2020. He began experiencing health issues in October last year.
After initial treatment in Afghanistan, he travelled to India in January for specialised care. Zadran showed early improvement and shifted to a hotel after discharge. However, his condition worsened within weeks, leading to readmission. Doctors detected a severe infection that spread across his body, including tuberculosis and brain involvement after MRI and CT scan.
Around March 26, tests confirmed Stage 4 HLH. Zadran now remains critical with limited speech and prolonged sleep. He has lost nearly 14 kilograms. Former Afghanistan players have extended support during this period.
