Faf du Plessis credited Aiden Markram’s IPL 2025 stint with Lucknow Super Giants for evolving his T20 batting.
Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis credited the IPL for Aiden Markram’s growth as a T20 batter. He said Markram’s 2025 season with Lucknow Super Giants played a key role in reshaping his approach at the top of the order.
Markram has led from the front in the ongoing T20 World Cup. Among openers who have faced at least 100 deliveries, he owns the highest strike-rate of 175.16. Du Plessis explained that opening in IPL 2025 forced Markram to adapt to modern demands. The Impact-Sub rule and fast scoring trends left little room for a traditional approach.
“I think what was really good in terms of his own game is the [IPL 2025] season where he opened for LSG and the IPL almost demanded that you needed to play in that way in order for you to keep your place. It was obviously the Impact-Sub [rule] and the way the game was moving. As an opener, you couldn’t play the old-school way anymore,” du Plessis was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Notably, in the current T20 World Cup, Markram stands third on the run charts with 268 runs from 7 innings.
“The game demands it from you, and if you don’t evolve with the game, then you get left behind. So with Aiden, naturally, the game has moved that way,” he added.
