Gautam Gambhir Says He Wants MS Dhoni To Take Over As India Coach In Future

Gautam Gambhir revealed that he hopes MS Dhoni could become India’s head coach in the future during a recent public event.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has supported the idea of MS Dhoni becoming India’s head coach in the future. He shared his thoughts during a RevSportz event on Monday, March 16. The discussion followed India’s win in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Gambhir said he hopes Dhoni could eventually take charge of the Indian side. Dhoni had earlier posted a message on social media after the final. The former captain also attended the title match and congratulated the team. The coach added that the situation could reverse one day, with him sending congratulations.

“Good on him to come and watch the World Cup final. Good on him to ask me to smile, and I wish one day he could be in my position, and I can write the same thing, and hopefully, he can smile from the dugout,” Gambhir said at the event.

Notably, MS Dhoni has not taken a coaching role yet. His only involvement with the national side came during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 as a mentor. India exited that tournament during the group stage. Dhoni will next appear in the Indian Premier League 2026. Chennai Super Kings begin their campaign against Rajasthan Royals on March 30.
