Shubman Gill Unavailable for 2nd Test; Sai Sudharsan Named Replacement, Pant Leads

Shubman Gill has reportedly been ruled out of the second Test against South Africa due to a neck injury, with Sai Sudharsan set to replace him and Rishabh Pant expected to lead India.

Indian captain Shubman Gill will reportedly miss the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati after failing to recover fully from the neck injury he sustained during the Kolkata match. According to reports from The Indian Express, Sai Sudharsan, his Gujarat Titans teammate, is expected to take his place in the XI, while vice-captain Rishabh Pant will lead the side.

Gill suffered the injury on Day 2 of the first Test and underwent overnight observation at a Kolkata hospital before being discharged with a neck brace. He later travelled with the squad to Guwahati, but his movement remained restricted. The BCCI confirmed that Gill had responded to treatment but required continued monitoring.

“Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day’s play,” the official statement from BCCI read.

“He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team, and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be taken accordingly,” it added.

Rishabh Pant will now lead India in a Test for the first time, stepping in after Gill’s absence. Meanwhile, Sai Sudharsan, who scored 87 and 39 in his last appearance for India, is expected to slot in at number three. His inclusion may create a left-heavy batting order, with up to seven left-handers in the XI.
