The ICC was reported to be considering strong sanctions after Pakistan decided to boycott its group-stage match against India at the T20 World Cup 2026.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) was reportedly set to consider extreme measures against Pakistan following its decision to boycott the group-stage match against India at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. While Pakistan are still set to participate in the tournament, their selective refusal to play India has triggered strong backlash across the cricketing world.
According to sources, the move has not gone down well with several ICC member boards, and discussions around serious consequences, including Pakistan being barred from international cricket, were said to be underway.
The Pakistan and ICC Standoff
Pakistan’s decision followed the ICC’s earlier move to remove Bangladesh from the T20 World Cup 2026 after they refused to play matches in India due to security concerns. At the ICC Board meeting, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) emerged as the only member to back Bangladesh and accused the global body of favouring India.
Subsequently, the Pakistani government approved the national team’s participation in the World Cup but directed it not to play India in the high-profile Group A match scheduled for February 15 in Colombo. Notably, Pakistan are still expected to travel to Sri Lanka and play their remaining group-stage fixtures, making the boycott selective rather than a complete withdrawal from the event.

ICC yet to receive official word from PCB
According to reports from RevSportz, ICC member boards are highly frustrated with Pakistan’s stance. Sources indicated that an ICC Board meeting could be convened within the next 48 to 72 hours, possibly on Tuesday or Wednesday, to address the issue formally. As of now, the ICC has not received an official written communication from the PCB, though backchannel discussions among member boards have already begun.
The potential consequences for Pakistan could be severe. Sanctions reportedly under consideration include suspension from international cricket, withdrawal of ICC central funding, freezing of ICC rankings, loss of World Test Championship points, and possible restrictions on foreign players participating in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). There is also concern that leading cricketing nations may refuse to tour Pakistan in the future.
