IND vs NZ | Daryl Mitchell Outshines KL Rahul To Level OD

Daryl Mitchell’s commanding century overshadowed KL Rahul’s hundred as New Zealand defeated India to level the three-match ODI series 1-1 in Rajkot

New Zealand turned up with intent and made a strong statement as they bounced back to level the three-match ODI series against India at 1-1 in Rajkot. The Michael Bracewell-led side posed a stiff challenge to the Indian batters, especially Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and bundled the hosts out for a modest total at the Kotambi Stadium.

In the chase, New Zealand were equally clinical with the bat, led by a match-winning innings from Daryl Mitchell. The Indian bowlers struggled to make an impact, allowing the visitors to dominate proceedings and seal a comprehensive victory.

It turned out to be an electric contest in Rajkot, but one that ended in disappointment for the hosts. Here is how the match unfolded.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma fail as India stumble early

India’s innings unfolded like a high-thriller drama. After being forced to bat first, expectations were high from Virat Kohli, particularly after he narrowly missed out on a century in the first ODI.

Rohit Sharma faltered once again, scoring just 24 runs off 38 balls, while captain Shubman Gill held one end. Rohit’s dismissal brought Kohli in at No. 3, but to the dismay of his fans, he was undone by a peach of a delivery from Kristian Clarke and had to walk back for 23.

Following Kohli’s departure, Ravindra Jadeja walked in and played a gritty knock of 27 off 44 deliveries. However, the standout performance in India’s innings came from KL Rahul.

KL Rahul rescues India with a fighting hundred

KL Rahul produced a magnificent knock of 112 off 92 balls to steady India’s sinking ship. From a precarious 115/3 at the end of 22 overs, Rahul anchored the innings and guided India to a competitive 284/7 at the end of 50 overs.

Rahul stitched together crucial partnerships with Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and even Mohammed Siraj, adding a brisk 28 runs late in the innings to push India beyond what initially looked like a below-par total.

Kristian Clarke leads New Zealand’s bowling effort

Kristian Clarke led New Zealand’s bowling attack with a fiery spell, picking up three wickets while conceding 56 runs from his eight overs. Jayden Lennox, Michael Bracewell, Zak Foulkes, and Kyle Jamieson supported him well, taking one wicket each to keep India in check and restrict them to a manageable total.

New Zealand begin chase cautiously

New Zealand started the chase at a measured pace, reaching 34 for 1 at the end of 10 overs, compared to India’s 57 at the same stage. After Devon Conway was dismissed by a jaffa from Harshit Rana, Will Young and Henry Nicholls held the fort.

Will Young showed great resilience, battling hard to score 98 runs off 118 deliveries, with seven boundaries to his name, as he absorbed pressure and kept the chase on track.

Daryl Mitchell masterclass seals the game

Henry Nicholls could not stay for long and departed in the 13th over, which brought Daryl Mitchell to the crease. Mitchell took control of the innings and, along with Will Young, stitched together a crucial 162-run partnership off 152 deliveries.

After Young’s dismissal, Mitchell continued to dominate and saw the game through alongside Glenn Phillips. The duo added a brisk 78 runs off 57 deliveries, guiding New Zealand to a seven-wicket win.

Indian bowlers struggle in Rajkot

The Indian bowlers endured a difficult outing, with only Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, and Kuldeep Yadav managing to pick up one wicket each, and that too at relatively high economy rates. Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj went wicketless and failed to make a significant impact.
