India Women pulled off a record-breaking five-wicket win over Australia in Navi Mumbai, chasing the highest-ever total in a World Cup knockout to reach the final.
India Women (341/5) scripted a historic win in Navi Mumbai, defeating Australia by five wickets to enter the Women’s World Cup final. The hosts chased down 339 with nine balls to spare, marking the highest successful chase ever in a World Cup knockout across men’s and women’s cricket.
Jemimah Rodrigues(127) and Harmanpreet Kaur(89) formed a strong partnership, which added 167 runs for the third wicket. Their stand kept India in control despite early dismissals of Shafali Verma(10) and Smriti Mandhana(24).
Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma added vital runs towards the end to seal the chase. Rodrigues, who was dropped twice on 82 and 106, made Australia pay for their missed chances with her innings.
Earlier, Australia had posted 338 after being put in to bat. Phoebe Litchfield starred with a sublime century in a 155-run partnership with Ellyse Perry, who accelerated after a slow start. Ashleigh Gardner added useful runs down the order, but Australia’s late slowdown proved costly.
India showed calmness under pressure this time. The win ended Australia’s long unbeaten streak in ODI World Cups, stretching back to 2017 – also against India.
With this win, India booked a spot in the final, where they will face South Africa on November 2 for the title.
There are wins that go beyond numbers on a scoreboard. This was one of them.
