Scotland registered a dominant win against Italy in the T20 World Cup 2026 clash by 73 runs.
Scotland registered a commanding 73-run victory over Italy in the seventh Group C match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at Eden Gardens on February 9, delivering a dominant all-round performance to begin their campaign on a high.
Batting first, Scotland piled up an imposing 207 for 4 from their 20 overs, powered by a strong top-order display and a blistering finish. Opener George Munsey led the charge with a superb 84 off 54 balls, striking 13 fours and two sixes. Munsey and Michael Jones laid a solid foundation with a 126-run opening partnership, the highest stand of the innings. Jones played a steady supporting role, scoring 37 off 30 deliveries.
After Munsey fell in the 14th over, Scotland maintained momentum through Brandon McMullen, who remained unbeaten on 41 off just 18 balls, smashing four sixes at a strike rate of over 227. Captain Richie Berrington contributed 15 off 11 balls before falling late in the innings.
The highlight of the final overs came from Michael Leask, who produced a sensational cameo, scoring an unbeaten 22 off just five balls, including two fours and two sixes, to push Scotland past the 200-run mark.
For Italy, Ali Hasan was the most economical bowler, finishing with figures of 1 for 21 from four overs. However, the rest of the attack struggled to contain Scotland’s aggressive batting, conceding runs at a brisk pace.
Italy’s Heartbreak While Chasing Total
Chasing a daunting target of 208, Italy’s innings never gained stability. Justin Mosca was dismissed off the first ball, and wickets fell regularly during the powerplay. JJ Smuts scored a quick 22 off 11 balls, while Harry Manenti fought hard with 37 off 25 deliveries. Ben Manenti was the standout performer with the bat for Italy, scoring 52 off 31 balls, including five fours and a six, but lacked support from the lower order.
Italy were eventually bowled out for 134 in 16.4 overs. Captain Wayne Madsen was absent hurt and did not bat, further denting Italy’s chances in the chase.

Michael Leask starred with the ball as well, producing match-winning figures of 4 for 17 from four overs. He removed key batters and cleaned up the tail to cap off an outstanding all-round performance, earning him the Player of the Match award. Mark Watt also played a crucial role, picking up 2 for 24, while Brad Currie and Brad Wheal chipped in with one wicket each.
With this emphatic win, Scotland not only secured two vital points but also boosted their net run rate, sending a strong message in Group C.
