Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen clash over Jacob Bethell’s IPL 2026 stint, debating game time versus elite exposure for the young RCB star.
Two of England’s biggest batting names, Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen, have expressed contrasting opinions over the development of young talent Jacob Bethell during the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 season.
Bethell, who is currently part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru squad, is yet to feature in a match this season, raising questions about whether he is benefiting from his time in the league.
Cook believes the 22-year-old would be better served returning to England and gaining match experience in county cricket rather than sitting on the sidelines in India.
“(But) it’s not ideal, is it? He’s sitting on his a*** at the IPL, not doing anything. Ideally, he could come back and open for Warwickshire to help England,” Cook said on Stick To Cricket.
Pietersen Backs IPL Exposure And Learning Curve
However, Pietersen strongly disagreed with Cook’s assessment, arguing that the IPL environment offers invaluable learning opportunities even without game time. Drawing from his own experience, Pietersen emphasised the importance of being around elite players.
“Alastair Cook has absolutely NO IDEA what it’s like to be in the IPL,” Pietersen posted on X. “What’s it’s like to always be around the best players in the world. So his opinion on Jacob Bethell doesn’t matter at all. Stay in India, Jacob. I know, even though you’re not playing, you’re learning and will be a way better player.”

Bethell Seen As Future England Opener
Despite his criticism, Cook also highlighted Bethell’s potential, particularly in the longer format of the game. Speaking on Stick To Cricket, the former England captain backed the youngster as a future Test opener based on his performances in challenging conditions.
“For that top order batting, the way he played at Sydney (in the Ashes against Australia in January), against that attack, in those conditions…I’ve looked at a player there, and I’m certain this bloke can open. If he can bat three, he can open,” Cook said.
Bethell had a brief stint in IPL last season, scoring 67 runs in two innings at an impressive strike rate of 171.79. While he awaits opportunities this year, the debate over his development pathway continues to divide opinion in English cricket.
