Jacob Bethell Set To Be Fit From Injury For New Zealand Test Series

ECB Confirm Jacob Bethell’s Return to UK From IPL 2026 Due to Finger Injury

England remain optimistic over Jacob Bethell’s availability for the first Test against New Zealand despite the finger injury that cut short his IPL 2026 stint with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

England youngster Jacob Bethell is expected to recover in time for the opening Test against New Zealand despite suffering a finger injury during his Indian Premier League 2026 campaign with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

The left-handed batter returned home over the weekend after injuring his left ring finger, bringing an early end to his time in the IPL before the playoffs.

Bethell underwent scans on Tuesday, and the England management is continuing to assess his fitness ahead of the first Test at Lord’s, which begins on June 4. Despite the setback, the 22-year-old remains likely to take up the crucial No.3 role in England’s batting lineup.

Jacob Bethell Set For Key England Role Despite Injury Concern

Bethell’s expected inclusion comes after an impressive start to his Test career. The Warwickshire batter scored a breakthrough century during England’s final Ashes Test against Australia in Sydney earlier this year, one of the few positives in England’s disappointing 4-1 series defeat.

If declared fit, Bethell will bat at No.3 in a home Test for the first time in his career. England are also preparing to hand Emilio Gay his Test debut as an opener alongside Ben Duckett, while uncapped wicketkeeper-batter James Rew remains on standby in case Bethell fails to recover in time.

The youngster currently averages 43.27 across six Test matches and is regarded as one of England’s brightest emerging batters in red-ball cricket.

IPL Stint With RCB Sparks Debate Over Red-Ball Preparation

Bethell’s participation in IPL 2026 had earlier become a topic of debate in English cricket circles, especially due to his limited appearances in County Championship cricket. Since August 2024, he has featured only once in the domestic red-ball competition.

Before Bethell broke into the Royal Challengers Bengaluru playing XI midway through the season, former England captain Alastair Cook questioned the youngster’s decision to stay in India.

“He’s not doing anything. Ideally he could come back and open for Warwickshire to help England.”

Cook’s comments were later countered by former England star Kevin Pietersen, who strongly defended Bethell’s IPL experience.

“Alastair Cook has absolutely NO IDEA what it’s like to be in the IPL. What it’s like to always be around the best players in the world.”

“So his opinion on Jacob Bethell doesn’t matter at all. Stay in India, Jacob. I know, even though you’re not playing, you’re learning and will be a way better player.”

Bethell eventually got his opportunity with RCB after Phil Salt sustained an injury during the tournament. However, the England batter could not fully capitalize on the chance, with his highest score in seven innings being 27.

RCB Reach IPL Final As Bethell Focus Shifts To England Duty

In Bethell’s absence, Royal Challengers Bengaluru progressed to the IPL 2026 final and will now compete for consecutive titles. Had he stayed available for the final, Bethell would have joined England’s Test squad only two days before the Lord’s Test.

England are already without fast bowler Jofra Archer for the series opener after his own IPL campaign with Rajasthan Royals. As a result, Bethell’s fitness has become an even more important factor ahead of the New Zealand series.

Despite concerns surrounding his injury and lack of recent red-ball cricket, England continue to back the talented left-hander to deliver at the highest level once again.
